An independent candidate has arisen, a well-known figure representing fringe opinions with a small but enthusiastic base.
The president announces that he will not run for reelection, and the vice president receives the nomination.
The openly-leftist side of the Democrat Party is furious.
The main body of the Dems dutifully supports the vice president’s presidential run.
The Republican candidate wins the ensuing election.
